Duckie Race
Gostraight down the river through Class I - III rapids. Duckies are a combination of
raft, canoe and a kayak paddled with double edge paddles.
Training Tips

The duckies for this event are two-person. It generally works best to put the heaviest person in the back and the lightest person in the front. You can sit with your legs crossed (as long as you don't have big legs) with legs forward slightly bent or on your knees. It may be good to change positions if you have bad or stiff knees.
Maneuvering:

The person in the back does all the steering and the person in the front paddles consistently. You should start out paddling with short, quick strokes and then
build up to long, strong strokes. Ideally you will want to paddle opposite of one another (while one person takes a stroke on the right side, the other person takes a stroke on the left side). Keep in mind that it is more productive to take an additional forward stroke to adjust direction rather than a back stroke. Back strokes will slow you down.

Swimming/ Falling out/ Overturning:

Grab a hold of the duckie right away! Don't let go of your paddle! To climb back in, either climb in on opposite sides from one another or hold the duckie for each other as you climb in one at a time. Stay with your other duckie team members to be there to help them if they swim, lose a paddle or overturn.

· The middle of the river should always have the fastest current.

· If two duckies run into each other in a rapid one of them is likely to overturn.

· You should always go straight into waves. If you hit a wave sideways, it could flip the duckie. Lean into the wave if hitting it sideways.

· There will be rocks in your way! To get off of a rock:
1st - try rocking back and forth,
2nd - try moving to one end or the other of the duckie,
3rd - one person at a time get out and push the duckie around (never letting go of it!)

These are the basics!! Good luck!!

Whitewater Raft Race
There are a total of 35 significant rapids on the 13-mile stretch and all teams will be accompanied by a certified professional White Water Rafting Guide.

Swim
The swim will be ½ mile long during the whitewater race. Each team will be required to have one swimmer in the water (same as last year). Helmets and PFD's (provided) are required.

14 Miles Mountain Bike
Flat terrain, intense hills and tons of mud puddles. Bring your own bike or rent locally.

Mountain Hike
The hike can be crawled, walked or run, whichever gets you to the finish line. The hike will feature some of the most rugged terrain in the Appalachians.

8K Mountain Run
The terrain will mainly be on a dirt road with brutal uphill challenges.
